thinking for a while about the rewards for success, points, fans, prize money and so on. It bothered me that despite winning twice as many races and yellow jerseys as my main rival I was pretty much tied for points and often seen to have less fans than teams that win less. It seems that if I want fans and ranking points I should just send out 5 GC riders each time and hope to grab lot of places in the top 10. However you don’t want a game that just throws money at the winners and leaves the rest of the league unable to compete so I’ve got a few ideas that may help.
Ranking points
No need to get too extreme here. Ranking systems are often a bit odd and won’t reflect popular views of the race. Here is the UCI points system en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCI_World_Tour from which I note that stages in tours don’t get a whole lot of points relative to the GC. I’ve had a look in the wiki and I’m not sure we hand out points for GC at all which could explain some things. I’m happy for 2nd + 3rd to win more points that 1st but not for the stages to count way more than the GC.
Fans
I’ve read peloton.wikidot.com/supporters and feel this could do with some work. I’d like to see a system where there is some model of supporters that grows over the season if you are successful. However a bigger issue is that they appear to react to ranking points, getting more excited by you placing 2nd and 3rd than 1st & nowhere. This isn’t very plausible and encourages you to ride for places rather than have riders go for stage wins and finish a later stage in the bus. Fans should be much more excited by 1st place than 2nd and third and arguable a lot more by 2nd and third than 4th to 10th. I think they also need to react to the daily standings so there is a bonus for holing yellow for a few days (and green, polka-dot). This is very much the way teams work IRL and it’s not right that holding yellow for several stages before the mountains has no meaning in this game.
Sponsors
OK here I’ll be a bit more radical and suggest that the sponsor contract offers an end of season bonus based not on ranking but on results through the season This could just be a bonus for wins, GC, jerseys but again should reward daily jersey holders. When agreeing a sponsor deal you would have a choice of how much reward you want to take at the end vs how much you take in the weekly payment. Again this reflects the idea that sponsors want to see their name at the front rather than in the ranking tables, but doesn’t just add to the rewards for winning.
Overall what I am trying to do is to make the game more like the sport where there are different objective to chase within the same race. I think winning should matter more than ranking but I don’t want to make things unbalanced at the same time.
Anyone else been thinking about this?
