OK, here's the new process to determine the race class for each stage:
nikeboy, please create 20 cyclists. They should have a - let's say - 2.0 in every skill but one.
For the first 5: Make one a flat cyclist: 5/2/2/2/2/2, the 2nd one a hill specialist: 2/5/2/2/2/2 ... as well as a mountain, a downhill and a sprint specialist (2/2/2/2/5/2).
For the 2nd 5: Make one a flat specialist with 4.5/2/2/2/2/2, the 2nd one hill: 2/4.5/2/2/2/2 ... and so on ... see above
For the 3rd 5: Make one a flat specialist with 4.0/2/2/2/2/2 ... see above
For the 4th 5: 3.5 ... see above
Perhaps you create another 80 additional cyclists with randomly distributed skills a/b/c/d/e/2, where no skill is > 3 and the sum of a+b+c+d+e = 13
Now you create a race with the new engine for every stage and let these 100 cyclists compete without any special orders.
If you can turn off flats and falls - do so. If not you have to give all cyclists a 20/20 and in case that one of them suffers a flat or fall you have to repeat this race.
If the winner is one of the cyclists with a 5 in a skill the stage will henceforth be called a <winner's 5.0-skill> stage. All other stages should be called mixed stages.
This is imho more reliable than just counting terrain km. See my previous example with the 100 km flat followed by 20 km mountain.

i dont think that this would work in the new engine, because tactics will be too important in the new one. Groups are getting only seperated when riders are set to attack. thus the first kilometres of a race would not matter, if we make an automatic race without tactics.
lets take your example (100km flat + 20 mountain). the first 100 km nobody would try to escape and at the end the mountain cyclist will win the sprint. However if you can use tactics the flat cyclist have pretty good chances to escape on the first 100 km.
Same thing it is with other profiles. You can have 100 km Hill and dwonhill if the last km are flat the flat cyclist would win without tactics. However with tactics a hill cyclist has very good chances to escape.

The first season with the new Race Engine will be a learning experience for everyone, including IP and Nikeboy.
I'd suggest we keep on testing Funraces so we can see that escapes are possible, and that the different terrains are separating the peloton in a reasonable manner.
IP and Nikeboy are going to do their best to put together a schedule with a terrain distribution that is balanced.
I'd further suggest that there be some flexibility in that season schedule, so that if it becomes clear that the terrain types are unbalanced, the last 3-5 weeks of the schedule can be changed if appropriate. I'd rather have to re-adjust the racing schedule for my team than see a whole season go unbalanced.

Wouldn't it be nice to add a feature to create 'kasseistroken'? In the (Belgian) classics these 'kasseistroken' (I don't know the English translation, sorry) are very important parts in the stage. Tomorrow, I will finish my stage profiles, and I will send them. My guess is that about 70% is flat, 12,5% is hill, 12,5% is downhill and mountain is only 5%. All the stages are in the Netherlands, and that's (almost) the flattest country in the world. I have made one mountain stage in Friesland, but the rest of the stages look more or less like the real profiles, but include a bit more mountain and (down)hill.

Cobblestones? They could be nice, but how would they affect? One option could be that groups would have less effect there. Also steering could have some effect. ---------- I could do some (mountain) races: 107 Grand Prix Herning 130 GP Kranj 169 Memorial Marco Pantani 205 Grand Caucasus Tour 209 Glava Tour of Norway

Steering and flat should have an inlfuence on this skill, but I guess that this feature won´t be implemented anytime. I´d like to do: - 82. Grand Prix el Salvador - 88. Grand Prix GSB - 215. Zeeuws Wielerweekend - 216. Ster ZLM Toer GP Jan van Heeswijk - 242. World Ports Classic

when I created the new Paris-Roubaix, I tried to replace cobblestone by hill, to have some effort, but of course it's not the same: url there are almost no hills in Paris-Roubaix, but all is decided on the cobblestones
