Well, excuse me my harsh words. But it really sucks.
It has nothing to do with negotiation. You just have to artificially lower the mood until you can seriously start negotiating. Why isn't there a button "Poke the cyclist hardly with a stick to lower his mood"? So I could press the button 10 times before starting negotiating seriously. As it is I have to save a reminder in Outlook to start a negotiation once a day.
Another approach that could help would be to avoid such absurd salary expectations. Just to explain my point here's an example of one of my cyclists:
current wage $16,494 wished salary $297,893 (75 weeks)
Seriously?
(So lookout for the transfer list. Maybe there will be a great cyclist for sale in about 2 weeks :-(

Agree, that is absurd. But I guess it is not so easy to change it?

75 weeks costs a lot of time, mood and money. Try giving them short term renewals and you can even boost their mood for little money.

So, here are the new mood and wage rules as posted by Schizm in the announcement. Thanks for that Frank! 1 mood will be recalculated weekly, after the sunday-update ! 2 the goal was to base the mood primarly on the wage that is payed in respect tot the transfervalue, but also age and duration now have a bigger effect. 3 not only underpayment but also (serious) overpayment will result in a lower mood ! (roughly speaking 1% of the transfervalue is considered a normal wage, the best moods (without bonuspoints) can be reached somewhere between 2 to 3 %, if you pay 4% or more you are actually scoring a lower rmood.) 4 victories/jerseys earned in the last (physical) year will raise the mood. 5 extra moodpoints for bonusses promissed (including wage increase/number of races) can be scored. 6 mood changes after a contract negotiation will disappear to prevent the kind of abuse we witnessed in the past !

it is a silly system and to change it looks like not easy however I would propose remove and wage connection and just recalculate automatically wages on season start. This works well in other sports management games such as Battrick and Hattrick. no need for any negotiations then. Lets strip out parts of the game that do not add value and this is one I would say
