Sat 24/03/07 - The Fleming Tom Boonen came in third in Saturday's Milan-Sanremo cycle race. The race was won by the 31-year-old Spaniard, Oscar Freire, who completed the 294km course in 6 hours, 43 minutes and 59 seconds. Freire came in just ahead of the Austrian Allan Davis and Tom Boonen. The Australian Robbie McEwen, who lives in Flanders and is married to a Fleming, came in fourth. The Milan-Sanremo race is celebrating it's one hundredth anniversary this year and Oscar Freire won the extra special race by beating off stiff competition from Boonen and Davis in the mass-sprint.
Six cyclists, De Kort, Koenitski, Sella, Traficante, Broett and Hernadez, lead from early on.
They remained out in front for the first 150km, enjoying a lead of as much as eight minutes at one stage.
However, with the Cipressa in sight, the peloton was able to push forward.
The Belgian Philippe Gilbert and the Italian Riccardo Ricco pulled out in front and had a ten second advantage at one stage.
This proved not to be enough though and in the end it was Freire that took the race just as he did in 2004.
